SacramentsThe whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. (CCC 1113)

While we believe that human life is infused with the sacramental goodness of God, the Catholic Church has defined seven sacraments - instituted by and through the life of Jesus Christ. It is through the experience of the sacramental ritual that we are infused with God’s grace. The Sacraments nourish and strengthen us as they express and build up our faith.

2016/17 Sacramental Preparation Program

The Diocese does preparation for sacraments under what is called the Restored Order.  This preparation sequences your child to receive their First Communion and Confirmation at what is called the age of reason (7 or 8 years old).

In revisioning our sacramental preparation program to conform to Diocesan requirements, beginning in the 2016-2017 year, children will receive preparation over a three-year period beginning in the 1st grade and ending in the 3rd grade with First Communion and Confirmation.

1st Grade – Catechesis on the Sacrament of Baptism

2nd Grade – Catechesis on the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Celebrate First Reconciliation on Tuesday, March 7th, 6:30pm

3rd Grade – Catechesis on the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist
Celebrate Confirmation and First Holy Communion in the Spring

Those incoming 2nd graders will have two years of instruction and will receive the sacrament of First Reconciliation this year and the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion in the 3rd grade.

Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive preparation for your children so that as they grow in years they fully understand the sacramental life of the Church and grow in faith and spiritual maturity to apply their understanding in prayer and service. The goal in all our faith formation as a parish is to support the parents who are the primary catechists of their children.

Contact Ami Peterson through the Cathedral office to sign up your child or to get more information.

2017-2018 Sacramental Preparation Schedule

Once a month sessions will take place on designated Wednesdays from 5:45 – 7pm as follows:

October 18
November 29
December 13
January 10
February 7
March 7
April 18
May 30

These sessions are for both parent and child and will be held in Meeting Room A at the Cathedral.
Each session will include 15 minutes’ worth of work to be done at home.

Along with these sessions we will have a five-hour retreat during the summer to reinforce vital material and have fun in the process.  We will offer this retreat twice and you can pick which date works best for you.  These retreats are for all children and parents participating in the sacramental preparation program on any grade level.  Times are not yet set, but the dates are:

Saturday, June 9, 2018
Saturday, July 7, 2018

We are required by the Diocese to offer 15 hours of sacramental preparation each year outside of Family Faith Formation and St. Mary School classes.  With 8 one hour sessions during the school year along with homework and our 5-hour retreat, we meet that requirement.

The cost for the sacramental preparation program is $35.  This is a one-time cost and will cover materials for the entire three-year cycle.
